![]() ![]() The whole enterprise of schooling is an improvement initiative what exactly justifies the pronounced scrutiny and skepticism under which you place this particular program? Is it simply that it represents a foray beyond the level of the ‘normal’ – an arbitrary and rising watermark if there ever was one? John, I understand your concern – superfluity of the reductio ad Nazium aside – but I fail to see how this method of “tinkering with our kids” is substantively morally different from educating them in the first place. Image Credit: Calligraphy by Kanjuro Shibata What it does for kids is much like what mindfulness-based stress reduction does for adults: captures the advantages of ages-old meditation techniques and transposes so that it is applicable to the modern world.Ī wonderful piece of brain technology indeed. The MindUP™ program has obvious roots in Buddhist meditation techniques but is decidedly non-religious. “My child is always talking about his prefrontal cortex and amygdala – he is so happy and has been teaching all of us MindUP™ at home.” His mom was amazed… and told the teacher and many parents at school.” While in the car, he told his mom he knew why the other boy bullied him…he said the boy did not use his pre-frontal cortex to make good decisions and he often acted that way because of his amygdala. Apparently he spent some time thinking about what had happened. Recently this student had contact with his previous class and classmates. “A kindergarten student who was being bullied in school was moved to another class. It really helped me basically with a lot of things, like sleeping through the night, eating, being happier at school, making new friends and blocking out my little sister’s nagging!” Some testimonials from the MindUP™ website. As an added benefit, MindUP™ is also making kids budding neurobiologists – each lesson is accompanied by a description of what goes on in the brain when one practices mindfulness, and kids apparently go home to their families and tell them about their brains. It has turned into a full-fledged meme, spreading like wildfire in the absence of marketing. High school teachers are starting to ask for a version of the program for their students. When teachers who are not using the program see what a powerful positive effect it is having on kids in other classes, they clamour for having the curriculum included in their daily lesson plans. The results are not yet published, but even the non-quantitative results are compelling. Kim is in the process of carrying out a proper experiment on the MindUP™ program, with some classes receive no training, others receiving sham training, and other getting the full MindUP™ curriculum. Because each session of the program is brief, children are not only able to manage it but love it, telling their friends & families about their experiences on a regular basis. Three times a day, kids are given three minutes of a version of mindfulness training which, in aggregate, takes them through four 30 minute lessons: (1) Quieting the mind (2) Our senses (3) Practical Applications (4) Mindfulness and ourselves in the world. What she told me was nothing less than astonishing. Supported by the Hawn Foundation for Mindful Education, the MindUP™ program is reaping great rewards for schoolchildren in Vancouver and beyond. I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours on an airplane yesterday speaking with UBC Associate Professor Kim Schonert-Reich, one of the lead researchers on the efficacy of the MindUP™ curriculum on schoolchildren. The MindUP™ program, developed by actress Goldie Hawn and neurologist Judy Willis uses short bouts of mindfulness training to help elementary school children learn to regulate their own brains. If you think this is a fantasy, you would be wrong. Imagine a brain manipulation which gives children greater mental focus, improves empathy, and increases optimism. ![]() ![]() ![]() Then throw in the male physique and any measurement or calculator method simply results in a rough starting point. In 1952 former President Herbert Hoover used a Schlafly-designed speech teleprompter to address the 1952 Republican National Convention in Chicago. The technology soon became a staple of television news and is the primary system used by newscasters today. The producers of Dragnet (1951 TV series) estimated the use of teleprompters cut the show’s production time by as much as 50% Arthur Godfrey, Raymond Massey, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, and Helen Hayes were early users of the technology. His system uses a mirror to reflect a script onto a piece of glass placed in front of the camera lens, thus allowing the reader to look directly into the camera. ![]() Jess Oppenheimer, who created I Love Lucy and served for its first five years as its producer and head writer, developed the first "in-the-lens" prompter and was awarded U.S. The teleprompter was used for the first time on December 4, 1950, in filming the CBS soap “The First Hundred Years.” It was used by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in 1953 to read commercials on-camera. The script, in inch-high letters, was printed by a special electric typewriter on a paper scroll, which was advanced as the performer read, and the machines rented for the then-considerable sum of $30 per hour. It was simply a mechanical device, operated by a hidden technician, located near the camera. ![]() Schlafly built the first teleprompter in 1950. Barton was an actor who suggested the concept of the teleprompter as a means of assisting television performers who had to memorize large amounts of material in a short time. Mechanically this works in a very similar way to the Pepper's ghost illusion from classic theatre: an image viewable from one angle but not another.īecause the speaker can look straight at the lens while reading the script, the teleprompter creates the illusion that the speaker has memorized the speech or is speaking spontaneously, looking directly into the camera lens. Light from the performer passes through the front side of the glass into the lens, while a shroud surrounding the lens and the back side of the glass prevents unwanted light from entering the lens. The screen is in front of, and usually below, the lens of a professional video camera, and the words on the screen are reflected to the eyes of the presenter using a sheet of clear glass or other beam splitter, so that they are read by looking directly at the lens position, but are not imaged by the lens. You have teased that Stephanie Szostak and Ron Livingston are coming back as Delilah and Jon. The show ends in the most optimistic way and it is an ending that when we pitched it to the studios and the network, they were screaming, "That's great!"Ĩ Shows Like This Is Us to Watch If You Miss This Is Us For the friend group, it's, "We need you to know we've got you." We'll see that happen. For Maggie, it's repaying a debt that is not really a debt, but she sees it that way. He needs to be on the receiving end of it…The caretaker needs to be taken care of. He didn't read a room really well, and then went to Peter's…there's stuff that he's done, this self-imposed role that he plays. So the question is obviously, does Gary die? It's a story the cast has known of the last couple of years now, and when we heard we were coming back to tell the story, they were all on board. It is a privilege for us to get to tell the story. The first day in the writers room I told them, "This is my plan for the last episode, and this is what happened to John at the end of Season 1." It's a lot to take in, so we had conversations about, is this six or five? I always felt like it was five…This is so much more satisfying that we tell the whole story. The writers knew because there's things that came up that would make that not work. I'd let very few people into that circle to know. I think whenever I have created a pilot, I know what the series finale would be…So I knew from the beginning that this is the story we wanted to tell. What goals or story points did you know you wanted to hit before this show says goodbye?ĭJ Nash: I think the use of the word privilege is exactly right. You had the privilege of knowing this was the final season ahead of time. Meanwhile, it was not going smoothly for the rest of the friend group. Luckily, Gary got the good news that his body is responding to the chemo treatments, so he has a while longer to come to terms with exactly the type of father he wants to be. That also came in handy when Gary's dad died suddenly, bringing to the surface a lot of feelings about his own approach to fatherhood. ![]() After Rome ( Romany Malco) discovered Gary's new diagnosis in the video diary Gary has been making for his and Maggie's ( Allison Miller) unborn child, the rest of the group was informed, and the Season 5 premiere was spent making sure Maggie and Gary were sure they knew they had support wherever and whenever they needed it. This time it's around Gary ( James Roday Rodriguez), who we found out came out of cancer remission in the Season 4 finale. Here is a brief summary of the findings:Ĭure53’s complete report is available on their website. TunnelBear is one of the few VPN providers to undergo a third-party security audit. It is important to remember to enable VigilantBear (the leak protection feature) to be protected against data leaks. The TunnelBear Mac OS client also did not have any leaks in my tests. I did not find any IP address leaks or DNS leaks with the TunnelBear client. Here you can see the leak test results when connected to a TunnelBear server in Norway: Everything worked well without any leaks to report. I ran both the Windows and Mac OS apps through a round of VPN tests to check for leaks and problems. This feature acts as a kill switch to block traffic when there is no active VPN connection and can be activated directly within the VPN application. TunnelBear offers a basic leak protection option which is called VigilantBear. If you compare WireGuard vs OpenVPN, the speeds are usually much better with WireGuard. This is a relatively new protocol that provides very fast speeds along with upgraded security and encryption over legacy protocols. No WireGuard support with TunnelBearĪt the time of this review, TunnelBear does not support the WireGuard VPN protocol. OpenVPN is open source, but it requires the use of a third-party client and is more CPU-intensive. IKEv2 can be used natively on various devices (no app required) and runs with less CPU, but it is also not open source. Both OpenVPN and IKEv2 are secure and reliable VPN protocols. The IKEv2 protocol can be used with iOS and Windows as well. TunnelBear offers good data encryption using the 256-bit AES OpenVPN for Windows, Mac OS, and Android. We discuss this topic more in our post on the best VPN for Chrome. There are also a few other VPNs that offer browser extensions, including VPN.ac, ExpressVPN, and also NordVPN and CyberGhost. In this case, you can simply control the desktop VPN client through the browser. In other cases, such as with ExpressVPN, the browser extension just extends the VPN desktop client into the browser for easier functionality.
